Spring greens (and browns) - knitted felted "Gladys" bag. SOLD!

Knitted felted “Gladys” bag

This is an auction for a bag made by a South Londoner who knits, weaves, spins and blogs. Her daughter named the bag “Gladys” but with no further explanation.

It’s a large shoulder bag – capacious and handy – with pockets inside and out and with lots of character. It will be durable and practical as well as eye-catching with its texture and muted shading of colours, and it is the result of hours and hours of hand-craftwork.

It was hand-knitted using various left-over bits and pieces of all-wool yarn including some loom waste and some hand-spun wool – and then it was felted in the washing machine. The way it has felted gives the resulting fabric an almost sculpted, three-dimensional finish. This, together with the soft colours, gives it a comforting and rather luxurious character.

The basic design for the bag came from here, and this pattern was modified with the addition of a gusset and integral knitted and felted little pockets on the outside ends of the bag. These could take a mobile phone, or tickets, or an MP3 player (or MP4 for the most technologically advanced of you!).

The bag is finished by hand, fully lined with vintage Laura Ashley fabric, with 2 generous internal pockets and a vintage button.

The bag can be sponged for cleaning, and is also washable – a gentle hand-wash is recommended, though it would stand up to more vigorous treatment.

This is a totally unique and unrepeatable creation.

The dimensions of the bag are: 18inches/46+cm wide; 12.5inches/32+cm wide. The base is 3 inches/8+cm by 15 inches/38.5cm and the handles are 36 inches/91.5cm long.

Bids start at £28.00.

Postage would be: UK - £2.65; Europe - £3.76; Rest of the world - £6.50.

Postage is free on items which sell for over £50.00.

The auction begins at 9.00am Monday 15th June, 2009 and will end on Friday 19th June, 2009 at 12 midnight, London time. The highest bid before that time will win.
