Golden silk ikat scarf - SOLD

This wonderful scarf was given to made4aid by Doff, who has been weaving for at least 30 years.

It is handwoven on a table-top loom in 100% silk and its beautifully lustrous and light, drapes very well and feels just lovely.

The patchy stripe pattern in the centre of the scarf is achieved through a technique known as ikat.

This involves dying both warp and weft threads separately, in careful bundles, before they are put onto the loom ready for weaving - it is a very old and time-consuming skill - and this creates the "staggered" stripes when the weaving is done.

Doff did this dying herself to prepare the silk for weaving, and the pale-shading to darker gold is beautifully complemented by the darker and lighter grey in the stripes and twill patterns across the ends..

There is some variation of colour in the photographs here - the first photograph is the best representation of the colours/shades of the silk.

The scarf is approx. 10 inches/25cm wide and 55.5 inches/141cm long (excluding fringe).

  2. oh and PS to Annie, I've just realised that this post has the wrong postage costs. This item will cost considerably less postage than this - let me know where you are and I will tell you how much.

    sorry....
